Scene 1. Homes for a Pound

On the 30th June 2015, I made a flippent application for a scheme that Liverpool City Council was running called, Homes for a Pound.

Through the grapevine I got wind of the council’s plan to offer nearby residents a chance of home ownership by selling off several rows of dilapidated houses for £1. In return families had to have enough funds to refurbish the homes up a decent living standard. At the time these costs were estimated at £30,000.

Needless to say as a recent graduate I didnt have a penny to rub together in savings but I applied anyway, thinking that if they did ever shortlist me id just cross that metaphorical bridge/absolute lack of money problem when I got to it. I got the standard, ‘thank you for submitting your application email’ and forgot all about it.

Now fast forward 4 years to May 2019. I am still living and working in Liverpool except I have just had pennies from heaven land in my bank account. A windfall from an estranged, and strange (that’s another story) dead dad a month earlier. Causing a whole lot of emotional quandaries about what to do with this free money I now had, I thought it would be prudent to throw it into a high interest savings account and forget about it until I knew what I wanted to do with it.

Cue the telephone and the council ring me out of the blue on a Wednesday morning asking if I was still interested in the scheme. Urm yes I blurted out more interested now than I ever was.

I have been allocated a house on Webster road and have 12 months to refurbish it, but I am going to do more than refurbish it, I am going to redesign in and share it with everyone I love and make something beautiful and inspiring and I am going to relish every single day of it.

A picture of the house when I was first told id been allocated it in 2019 from google images. As you can see neither of my neighbours had started their renovations. I’ve no keys yet so only have this picture of the outside as I cant get in until the council make it official.
