I recently got me a dilapidated 2 bed house in Liverpool for £1.
I was given it under the condition I must renovate it within 12 months.
Here is my story.
So it turns out asbestos is spelt exactly how it sounds. It sounded like a nightmare to be told that a survey on the property has revealed it to lurk in asbestos textured coating in the ceilings and flooring all over the house. So the very first job was removal, but this has to be done by a competent HSE licensed asbestos contractor during lockdown. (oh yeah that deadly virus i mentioned, turns out it was a friendly Italian doctor that brought it to Europe, not me)
Asbestos, I learned, is in a lot of things and is only dangerous if being disturbed ie renovating. I had three quotes:
- North East Refurbishment – £4594.50 + VAT
- Clarkes Environmental – £7015 + VAT
- Omega Environmental – £2600 + VAT
First rule of project managing your renovations is get at least 3 quotes for everything and although these numbers are wildly different, I ended up only paying £1700 after getting a 4th. So new rule of project managing your renovations is get 4 quotes.
