Folkestone has always had an ‘us and them’ mentality it is an evolutionary story we have not yet escaped from. No doubt we all have friends and family with opinions on the matter of immigration- classic us and them!
Facts Not Fiction
It’s time to equip ourselves with facts.
Then call out misinformation or misunderstandings in conversation with friends and family.
Here is a great place to start, an infographic with some facts.
Try to not let fear of being attacked yourself be a reason to join a hate campaign.
Don’t follow the sheep by agreeing with age old sayings.
“Taking our jobs” etc etc. We all know a lazy Brit that can’t be arsed to work too.
People find a sense of community in shared hatred, it is another grim fact of our society that we have no other positive community outlet elsewhere.
A lot of our people have misplaced anger, feel free to ask people exactly what they are upset about but don’t dismiss their frustrations. The rate of inflation since Covid19 has made life hard, it doesn’t matter how many designer brands we wear, we are all part of the working class, we the poor, have faced growing inequality. This is not brown people’s fault.
This inequality comes from fiscal policy that allow tax avoidance for the ultra rich, right under our nose. Our struggle to make ends meet has nothing to do with people in boats. It’s the wealth gap divide between the top 1% who own 43% of all global assets and the rest of us. This is a global problem, not just national. This is where the anger should be directed.
Austerity measures, government policies and high finance is intentionally complicated to understand. It is much easier to take out our frustrations on asylum seekers and refugees.
Don’t believe the hype.
The sad truth is, getting Folkestone to understand how global finance works is much harder than smashing in the windows of a shitty BnB that temporarily houses claimants.
It is time to stop blaming ‘far-right’ groups exclusively and accept that it is also our people behaving badly. Most of whom are men with suppressed emotions, expressing sadness the only way non-creative people know how; visceral misplaced anger.
Gender Based Violence
It’s easier and less alarming to see the Southport stabbings as race related. But they aren’t. We have a problem with men who hate women, whether they kill a former partner, a complete stranger or launch a mass-casualty attack. Our society is so desperate to blame something else that it refuses to accept that violence towards women and girls (VAWG) in England and Wales is an epidemic. Read the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), report here. Our lovely white men make up the majority of perpetrators.
Things You Can Do
Have a cry – after all what happened in Southport was a tragedy, then get angry if you want but don’t miss out the vital part of processing your emotions.
Exercise – this is a great pressure release valve, don’t take to the keyboard.
Stop Clicking – have some restraint and stop watching coverage of the ‘riots’ because the more you click the more they will cover it.
Challenge the Narrative – is this about brown people or violence against women? The only facts we have is the sex of the victims and the perpetrator.
Stop saying illegal immigrants – just changing your language will help. There are asylum seekers and refugees.
If you have friends who are adamant that kicking all non-whites out the country is going to give them the good life, stop senseless violence and bring reciprocity to victims they are wrong.
Facts not fiction please fam.
