The Kent Downs Day 1

Rochester to Thurnham – 13.3 Miles

I set off from Liverpool afterwork the night before and had booked a single train fare to Rochester for £35. I took full advantage of the Travellodge’s unlimited breakfast the next morning and took a bacon bagel for the road too.

I was using Komoot to navigate the 47 mile trail through The Kent Downs, an undulating set of rolling hills, all the way to Folkestone on the coast.

I was soon skimming the town of Rochester along the esplanade and within an hour I was on The North Downs Way.

The well trodden Augustine Camino Pilgrimage was also sign posted and the route was dotted Kwith homages to ancient folk that had made the route.

The sunny skies continued and the path was fairly well signposted when you know where to look. A had the navigation app nudge me in the right direction a few times as there are lots of other footpaths always leaving and joining The Way.

The highlight of the morning was woodland walks, odd shaped trees and stumbling across a neolithic stone that’s apparently older than Stone Henge.

I was thrilled when I arrived at my destination for the night, The Black Horse Inn and was greeted by sweet friendly bar staff and a loving Labrador. I’d literally just walked in and I already had my cuppa’ tea on a tab. I’d just met the dog and he was already on his back giving me the tickle my tummy eyes. The owner lit a fire and I was home for the night.
